'Executive Order 9066'

scorching sun--
an exhibition of suitcases
from the Internment Camp

a month of sunflowers--
his middle name declares
he is American

wartime news clipping
of the all-Nisei battalion--
a white day moon

her high school photo
taken before '42...
a wind chime slowly turns

August cicadas--
could I carry an ocean
in one suitcase
Valentine's Day--
headless mannequins
in the maternity shop

Valentine's Day--
messengers with roses
brush against each other

spring snow
the skeletons
of fighter planes

Nagasaki Anniversary
a part of me decayed
beyond identification

Hiroshima Day--
reading the palm
of my left hand

mustard blossoms
those comic book heroines
from my childhood

cacophony--
today's moon has
a sharp edge

cicada chorus
what did I gain
by leaving home

Haiku
ocean waves--
a common denominator
for the butterfly and me

tadpole season
a pig-shaped pillow
wanting to be bought

the scent of autumn
Muslim men with
shelled peanuts

high autumn sky--
I wish I had webs
between my toes

a day moon--
I dance with the wind
inside me

following a dragonfly
I end up
in Shangri-La

a shooting star
sand dollars accepted
at the toll bridge

fireflies--
one step closer to a thing
left behind
